There’s a story in Toastmasters Magazine about Storytelling and Photography. Today I visited Toastcrackers Toastmasters Club in Kyiv, Ukraine. For their Warm-Up Exercise, they asked everyone to share a photo, and share the story of that photo. I shared my Facebook profile picture, and others shared photos and we all told a story based on that photo. What a great idea. We often hear the phrase, a picture tells a thousand words–what stories can you tell with your photos?

What makes an effective leader? This question is a focus of my research as an organizational scientist, executive coach, and leadership development consultant. Looking for answers, I recently completed the first round of a study of 195 leaders in 15 countries over 30 global organizations. Participants were asked to choose the 15 most important leadership competencies from a list of 74. I’ve grouped the top ones into five major themes that suggest a set of priorities for leaders and leadership development programs. The word “leadership” brings to mind many things.
- A political leader, who wants to convince you to support their cause.
- An explorer, cutting a swath for you to follow her through the jungle.
- An executive, developing his strategy to help you and your colleagues beat the competition.
